There's been a lot of talk about the Chinese and encroachment in the South China Sea, a lot of posturing on their part, and a lot of talk in allied military circles on Chinese weaponry. One thing I haven't seen a lot of lately, is do the Chinese have the logistics to successfully prosecute an offensive campaign.
It's quite difficult to tell, I've seen almost no studies on this, but this is probably the first question we have to ask ourselves. One of the things that slowed the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front and in North Africa was their bad logistics set up for an offensive campaign, particularly across the Mediterranean.
In 2016 the Chinese founded the Logistic Support Department of the Central Military Commission. This indicates that the Chinese are thinking along those lines. But are they serious about it? The Chinese have not conducted a large offensive operation against a serious opponent since the Korean war. And that was a bust. If we seriously want to know if the Chinese can mount an offensive, we should be examining their logistic preparations, which appear to be extensive.
