Why do we need liberty?

It was 1995 and I was a 2nd Lieutenant of Marines involved in an Amphibious Logistics exercise in Virginia Beach, Virginia. We were held captive to the base we were on and we were not able to execute the exercise because of the sea state. The Colonel in charge of the exercise was the commanding officer of the Sixth Marine Regiment whose name escapes me, a tall humorless robot of a man. After being stuck out there for a week without anything to do, the wing officer with us at the time asked the Colonel if we could have some liberty out in town. The Colonel coldly responded, "Why do we need liberty? If someone can give me a good reason why you need liberty than you can have it?"

Well Colonel, you were in the Marines for over twenty years, defending the Constitution of the United States and you were asking why we need liberty? Why do you think you should be allowed to enjoy the fruits of liberty when you are willing to give up your men's liberty because one of them got drunk on liberty and embarrassed you and you might not pick up general? Which I'm sure you didn't anyway. Thank God Thomas Jefferson didn't ask that question. Thank God Ben Franklin didn't ask that question. And thank God, George Washington who suffered through years of hell as a commander believed that we need liberty, and NEVER asked that question. Colonel, you have no right to the privilege of being an officer of Marines for not knowing why we need liberty.

So,as you sit there in your taxpayer funded home, where ever you are Colonel let me clue you in: people risk their lives by the thousands every year to swim, stagger, and crawl bleeding to the United States so they can have liberty. Ask them why they need liberty.

I knew they would try and say that the reversal of fortunes for the left, evidenced by the Congressional vote last year, and the huge move to the right of state legislative houses would be over and Obama and the left would enjoy another four years to wreck this country. Sure as shit, the first words of the article are:

"Last week, voters nationwide said no to the right-wing efforts of some state political leaders."

I don't know why I should care. Obama and Nancy Pelosi are the best Republican recruiters we've ever had. And I'm pretty sure the country will survive the upcoming financial collapse that is almost inevitable at this point. The Democrats probably won't survive since they don't believe in guns, but maybe they will find belief when the guvmint checks stop coming and the wolf starts knocking on the door. When the fifty-three percenters who pay taxes stop paying for the forty-seven percenters. When will that day come?

The Government tries to use Sharepoint, and fails miserably

The other day I was told I had to use a government SharePoint site for my job known as MCEITS. The Marine Corps something IT something site. Immediately, my heart froze at the prospect of having to use another crappy DoD content management system. I approached the System Access Request with extreme caution. One mistake and I would face hours of frustration. Little was I to know, even though I filled out the extensive error prone online disaster of forms without a mistake...the admins would still sit on it until I emailed them and asked them WTF? Then they got off their ponderous fat asses and approved the request, a task that took them at least 10 seconds.

Then things got bad. I found out that you had to use your CAC card to access the site. This is almost the equivalent of a death sentence to a DoD web site. There are so many problems with accessing CAC sites that the people who thought of making the CAC site a DoD requirement need to be lined up against a wall and shot as traitors.

True to form, as soon as I got access to the site, the CAC security stuff slowed everything to a snail like crawl when it worked at all. Which was rare.

So if you are reading this, and you are one of those who jumped on the CAC enabled web site bandwagon please do the United States defense team a favor, and shoot yourself in the head. You have made this country weaker and more painful to live in. With a single blow of your bureaucratic bullshit horn. But, you are probably not reading this. Because your computer doesn't work.

Apple Business Developer Account

So my boss wants us to make iPad apps. OK, no huge deal. Since WE are doing it, we need a business account, which is different from the personal developer account. No big deal, right?

WRONG!

Already establishing a crappy name for itself among developers for its restrictive bullshit process for the requirements on a personal developer account, Apple takes the sphincter police act one step further on its business account requirements. Described by one developer as "...the biggest irrelevant computer company..." Apple is killing the golden goose by doing everything they can to piss off every developer on the planet. Not only do they require you to FAX (seriously, FAX? WTF???) your right to exist as a company, but also you have to submit docs showing your right to speak for the company, exist as a human being, and consume oxygen. After which, your application will be "further reviewed."

After that, I went down to the Sprint store, and got myself an Android for 1/2 the billing costs of an AT&T iPhone. Bye AT&T. Bye Apple.

The Wall Street Journal reported today that the IT community responded to the release of the iPhone 4s with a tremendous yawn and drop in stock value. I'll follow that yawn with a "right back atcha Apple" while downloading the Eclipse plugin to make Android Apps. And you write them in Java. Know what that is Apple? It's a programming language that was made after Star Wars Episode IV. Unlike Objective C, the language Apple makes you code in for iOS. Which by all appearances was created by Ada Lovelace.

I predict Apple will fade into irrelevance again within five years. Short that Apple stock boys and girls. Now, that's an opportunity!

Kenmore Ultrawash Quietguard 4...can America be great again when we make crap like this?

I had an unfortunate experience of buying a Kenmore Ultrawash Quietguard 4 dishwasher and it stopped working after 3 years, when the dishes started coming out dirty. This piece of garbage had plenty of people complaining about it and I am pretty unhappy with it also. No more Kenmore anything for us. The Maytag refrigerator that I bought four years ago is also a piece of crap. The water tastes horrible out of the dispenser, even with a new filter and the temp control is horrible. When did we start turning out so much crap? Maytag, you are history too. And when you call the idiots, its always the same old song. "We have a new model that will fit your needs." Rigghttt!

Pantano, Marine Corps Legal, and NCIS

I just finished reading Ilario Pantano's Warlord, recanting his Odyssey through the Marine Corps legal system after a shitbird Sergeant named David Coburn decided to make up a story about Pantano murdering some Iraqi civilians. Pantano had a great career in the Marine Corps before he was railroaded. My main questions after reading the story are:

Why did the Division Legal Office and NCIS believe the story of a disgruntled shitbird Sgt like Coburn over all the other statements and press for an Article 32 hearing? Why did NCIS suppress some statements? The division legal officer was probably a clone of the same idiot division legal Colonel who told me to coerce a statement out of a witness, to which I told him to go to hell. Luckily I had a LtCol who also told him to go to hell.

Why did the NCIS withhold the multitude of witness testimony that was in favor of Pantano's story and only use shitbird testimony that was shredded by the defense during the Art 32 hearing? This was a criminal act by NCIS and I doubt they were held accountable for it (but they tried to hide their stupidity by holding up discovery). They basically ruined Pantano's career by their actions and got away with it without any repercussions. Not quite the shining professionals we're shown on TV, are they?

After it was all over, an autopsy of the Iraqis shot during the incident collaborated Pantano's story, but by that time the Marine Corps had already lost a great officer.

Here in Athens, young and fashionably disheveled people are waving red flags and holding a demonstration while marching around the Syntagma, the Greek Constitution Square.
"Who are they?" I ask a young and pretty Athenian, while we're watching from a trendy coffee shop.
"I don't know." She replied with an empty shake of her empty head. "We see them every couple of days."

But I know. They're communists, protesting the austerity measures of the Socialist Greek Parliament. Too little austerity and too late. I wonder what they're chanting. I doubt it's what I'm thinking:

While we're about out the door!"

Not the smartest group I've ever seen. Meanwhile the Socialist Greek Parliament is voting in higher taxes for the overburdened few who are paying them. Those who are, are in the minority in the crazy and corrupt tax system. More Socialist bullshit.
Athens, in Pericles time rebuilt it's temples and the streets were lined with beautiful and stately homes of it's wealthy merchants. Now its filled with ugly squat tenements that surround the beautiful government buildings like the new Acropolis museum, a 200 million dollar salute to government, paid for by the people and existing for the government.
Meanwhile, the lefty CNN International here blares about evil Republicans back home stifling Greek style progress by the hero Barack Obama. Oh, what can be done! Also CNN International claims millions of people are up in arms about the execution of Troy Davis while not a one is defending his victim, a cop who Davis shot while the cop was defending Davis' intended victim. I'll speak for that cop. His name was Mark MacPhail. He's the only hero I've heard about, while Pericles is rolling over a few block away.

The space between is the story about a flight attendant and a Pakistani boy who get together for a "Gee, we should hate each other but we're really all the same inside," sophomoric philosophy lesson from Hollywood. Well USA network, bad idea. I haven't noticed you love, peace, dope Hollywood types breaking your arms to welcome soldiers coming back from defending your freedom, maybe you should devote a little bit of time to that instead. Maybe the nine US servicemen who have died in Afghanistan this month by the time you showed your little hate and intolerance flick should be remembered. Or did you even know that was still going on? Marching in a peace parade or implicitly spitting on soldiers coming back from the fight doesn't mean you're involved USA network. And yes, you have no patriotism. There is none to question, because you have none.

Phoenix Burton Barr Library

Phoenix has a beautiful central library that we've paid many millions of tax dollars to build and maintain. Just one problem:

The homeless.

Now, I've been in some pretty bad shape myself a couple of times, and maybe even wasn't sure where I was going to spend the night but I've always managed to get a shower and clean up a bit. The homeless in this library infest it to the point where you can't sit down anywhere without the reek of urine and feces wafting over you like the pit of despair. I'm serious, the place is an architectural wonder and a olfactory Guantanamo Bay. They need to enforce some clothing and hygiene policies down there. That's the real question, why don't they? Maybe we need to ship the homeless down to the Phoenix City Council meetings, stench and all and make them stay there until the city council comes out with some new regs on hygiene for attending the library. If you smell, you no get to raise hell, down in your cell, at the library jail!

Really? Because the present administration and his congressional friends are so friendly to small business? Obviously! They're totally kicking ass in starting small businesses. If your small business is repossessing cars and houses or selling furniture from failed Borders stores maybe. I'm gonna have to cry BS on this one Patrick. In Europizing the US, the Obamacrats have made it as hard to make it as a small business in the US as making it in Europe. She had some good moments though. The best one was where she left the stage.

Goshen College insults the men who secured their freedom of religion

A little known (OK unknown) Mennonite college in Indiana has decided that they will no longer allow the Star Spangled Banner to be played at their college. I'm not a fan of any people who come to this country for religious freedom and then spit all over those who provide that freedom to them. The Mennonites were kicked out of just about every country they went to. Except this one. And how to they pay that tolerance back? Well, they insult it by outlawing the Star Spangled banner. You, know, that little ditty that they play at military ceremonies and other events. That song symbolizes the blood of our fallen who decided that they were going to die defending the Constitution and thus the rights of all of us. At least, that's what the Star Spangled Banner means to me and a lot of other American Servicemen. So Mennonites I would like to exercise my freedom of speech, which unlike you I paid for by serving in the military by telling you something:

GET OUT.

That's right. Get out of this country. Go somewhere else. You don't belong here. How's that for freedom of speech? How does it feel?

The Liberal Elite and Love for America

Laura Ingraham writes in her book, the Obama Diaries that "I have often tried to figured out why liberals--especially Ivy League-educated liberal--have such a loving America unconditionally."

I'll tell you why.

America is like a child to me in some respects. If you have never sacrificed something for a child, nurtured that child, tried to make it a better human being...can you really love that child? Does a mother who only loves her child when the kid does something that makes her look good, or gives her a present, really love that child? Of course not.

And that's why an Ivy League educated liberal can never love America unconditionally. How many of them have really sacrificed anything significant, put their lives on the line for this country? How many of them would speak their mind if they might forfeit their lives for doing so? Look at their silence on items where the threat is almost non-existent such as the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy. Where were they? Scared into silence for the most part.

That's why they don't love this country. Oh, they'll all say they love it. Just like the sociopath mother will say she loves her child. But they really don't know what that word means.

Retarded Security Clearance

I work on no classified systems, data, or anything else. Yet, my job requires me to have a security clearance. Which is another huge waste of taxpayer cabbage to the tune of several thousand dollars. And then they still give out security clearances to people like Bradley Manning who throws a temper tantrum because he's gay and picked on in the military so he downloads the entire SIPRNet and gives it to a bunch of American-hating douches.

So what is the answer? Well, use it or lose it. The program managers and civilian leadership need to pony up about security clearances. If their charges did not use their security clearance in the entire space it was active before the renewal date comes up, then don't renew it. Take the job off the list for clearance required. Then give more time to investigate the Bradley Mannings of the country.

Over and over again you see it. DoD investigations of contractors performing government functions. Why is this, journalists are constantly asking?

We as government contractors are faced with the army of DoD civilian employees who you have to kick, cajole, beg, plead, hunt down, and hundreds of other things to get them to do one simple task: their job. And often it doesn't get done at all. And YOU as the contractor are constantly getting yelled at because some fat, lazy, highly paid individual whose only other qualification is standing in a welfare line doesn't want to do their job. So, what do you end up doing? Your job AND their job. And who gets in trouble if you get caught? You, the contractor. Who gets in trouble if you don't do their job for them? You, the contractor. Tough racket sometimes.

She was a liberal too, by the way. So, now the liberals have figured out they can't work part time and pay for their 15 trillion dollar house, they are starting their exit strategy by ripping out the plumbing of the United States. Soon they will be moving out in the middle of the night, leaving us to deal with the mess. That's pretty terrible.

GAO Identifies 100 Billion in Savings

The GAO report identifying 100 billion in savings by reducing redundant programs was released a few months ago. Let's look at their findings:

1. The fragmented food safety system

Probably a good fix, but the system covering 300 million people needs to be decentralized. Are they going to do better than locals? Probably not. Cut it.

2. Realigning the military’s medical command

The military medical system is completely dysfunctional. But these political reorgs have only made things worse. Pull your head out of your ass GAO, stop screaming "REORG" every time you see a screwed up command. Military medical is screwed up because there is no accountability, and no quality control.

3. Streamlining 31 agencies that provide for urgent soldier needs

Yes. Get rid of the 30 that don't provide anything but expensive Federal Civilian welfare and reinforce the one that does.

4. Lack of coordination by counter-improvised explosive devices

Good luck getting Congress to get rid of their military rice bowls in their district

5. Streamlining military intelligence gathering

The term "Civilian Marine"

I was stationed in a place where the majority of the DoD workforce was DoD civilians a few years ago, and for the first time came into contact with the phrase "Civilian Marine." This was obviously dreamed up by a general who wears his ass as a hat, and whose own Marine status is highly questionable. If it was up to me, I would have a bunch of Marines track this clown down, publicly humiliate him by removing all of his service insignia from his uniform and strip him of his own title of Marine, he obviously has no freaking clue what that word means. Did these "Civilian Marines" go through Marine Corps boot camp? Did they go through OCS and TBS? Did they bury any of their brother Marines? Did they march through freezing cold and blistering hot weather, eat crappy chow that would make a pig puke, and carry back-crushing loads for miles and miles? Do they have vital parts of their bodies, like their backs and knees missing due to service to their country? Did they go from the yellow footprints to seeing the best and worst of what human beings can accomplish. No, they did not. They are not Marines.

The bottom line is this: there comes a time in many battles where the commander must decide whether to break the rules or preserve his career. The commander who puts his career and life on the line for his men deserves our respect. The commander who puts his career in front of his men (and we have plenty of those) deserves our contempt.

Plenty of fat to cut in DOD Budget

This may sound odd for a Government Contractor to say, but there is PLENTY of fat to cut in the DOD Budget.

Example: 300 Million Dollars in Navy Ships that were never finished

Example: Three billion a year the Army wastes on programs that go nowhere

Example: Marine Buck Rogers piece of crap that we wasted three billion on before canceling

And that's just the crap we know about.

None of these take a crack at the 650 billion in personnel costs of DoD. You could fire half of the DoD federal employees and recoup a couple of hundred billion on that alone. The cost of firing them would be steep, all you processes will speed up by an order of magnitude and there will be less bureaucracy. The bad news is, is that every village in the US would now have two idiots as they moved out of Washington.

US Army AKO (Army Knowledge Online)

Another system I've been forced to use is AKO. AKO is an website that the Army spends 67 million a year on. For a website. That has horrible reliability and performance metrics. Another example of how the government does IT: crappy. For some reviews and funny AKO videos:

Luke AFB ID Card Office

Well, it's that time of the year again. Time to go to the dreaded ID card office. This is where the government wastes billions of dollars in taxpayer money to make contractors travel to a DOD ID card office and sit in a room filled with zombies for hours to wait for the lazy-ass-slower-than-the-DMV clerks to type two words into a computer which takes 1/2 hour per customer but should take 5 minutes. Another problem is that the computer which loads a pitifully small amount of data takes 10 minutes to do it. Ten minutes to load a 144k chip, which is a tiny amount of memory for a modern computer. But that's how the government does everything in IT: BAD.
Today I went to Luke AFB in Glendale AZ. There were two enlisted AF clerks there to serve a roomful of people. One of them was a Master Sgt I think (who did he piss off?) proved he couldn't even do that job correctly because he spent half of the hour and a half time I was there talking on the phone to his buddies, reducing the amount of effective clerks to one. I could have been in and out of there in 20 minutes if the place was well run, but instead it took half the day to get there, get the card, and get back. Cost to the Taxpayers:$300. And that's not counting the security classes and forms I need to fill out to get the ID card, that's another $300. Total cost: $600. The officer in charge of that place should be booted out as an example.
And to add insult to injury, they have the camera set up to take really bad pictures. Probably on purpose.

At least there not as bad as the MARCORSYSCOM ID Card office in Quantico. Those morons are only open on Tues and Thu from 1-4 for slimy contractors, disrupting the schedule even worse, and wasting even more taxpayer money.

On raising the debt limit

A great conservative once said this about raising the debt limit:

Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America's priorities. Instead, interest payments are a significant tax on all Americans--a debt tax that Washington doesn't want to talk about. If Washington were serious about honest tax relief in this country, we would see an effort to reduce our national debt by returning to responsible fiscal policies. [...]

Now, there is nothing wrong with borrowing from foreign countries. But we must remember that the more we depend on foreign nations to lend us money, the more our economic security is tied to the whims of foreign leaders whose interests might not be aligned with ours.

Increasing America's debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that "the buck stops here." Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America's debt limit."

The news today is filled with reports of California telling Amazon that they are going to charge taxes on their California affiliates, justifying their taxing of internet retailers by saying they have an unfair advantage over brick and mortar retailers because they are not being taxed. I can't speak for everyone, but there is a great used bookstore down the street. Problem is the selection is nowhere near as good as Amazon's. But their prices are better than Amazon's because the shipping costs are pretty significant. Amazon's pricing isn't competitive, their selection is the reason I go there.

Hawaii Medical Center files for 2nd Bankruptcy

The Honolulu Star Advertiser has reported that the Hawaii Medical Center has filed for a second bankruptcy in two years. The reason:

Reductions in Medicare payments and a large amount of Medicare patients

That's right. An aging population and government healthcare drove the hospital to bankruptcy. But the Democrats are screaming very shrill little girl screams when any changes to Medicare or Social Security are attempted. Because of these huge obligations it is probably too late to do anything about the default or hyperinflation of the US Government as the interest builds up. The real question is when? When it happens it will be lightning fast, probably even too fast for the Feds to print money. And what is the worst situation: Hyperinflation or default? The country will survive, we've survived a civil war, attacks, depression, and a lot of other disasters. Hell, the Brits burnt down the White House in 1812. But a lot of the people that are depending on the Govt to take care of them are in for some rough times. And protesting is not gonna help a whole lot.

Hanauma bay bureaucracy

We made the mistake of going snorkeling in Hanauma Bay Oahu, which used to be a laid back place and fun to go to in the 80s. unfortunately the county government idiots that run this place have turned it into a bureaucratic nightmare. It looks like even the sea turtles have abandoned it. They say they are trying to bring it back after years of neglect...if so, fine. Close it down then. But now they try to indoctrinate you with forcing you to watch a film on what not to do in the bay, without enforcing any of the rules...pretty much like gun control. Worthless. We watched a bunch of fat worthless government employees sit around the parking lot and beach while being hijacked of cash twice, once for the fare to the bay and once when we got there for the entrance fee. Cancun had better lagoons with restaurants and bars and cleanup crews...commercial folks that actually worked for a living. It cost more to go to the Lagoons in Cancun, but it was all inclusive and a much more enjoyable experience.

Roadwork in Waikiki

We were walking in Waikiki yesterday and I noticed some unusual road construction going on. It's unusual because the roads looked brand new, yet they were being repaved. So I started asking the locals why the streets were being repaved, when they were brand new. The number one response was that there must be a gas leak or something. A cop I asked had the same opinion, that it was a waste of taxpayer money for one of Obama's "Shovel ready projects."
Worse yet, the North Shore of Oahu's roads are falling apart. Why aren't they being repaired? It just doesn't make any sense. And the contractors are breaking water mains, tying up traffic, and causing a mess.
